In April 2025, a new Virginia State Law was passed restricting the use of all personal student technology for all students, except for those with documented accommodations, during the school day. This means any personal electronic device that can connect to the Internet and wirelessly collect, process and transmit data, including smart watches and tablets. Policy 8655: Student Personal Device Use has been updated to reflect this new law. Moving forward, from “bell-to-bell” – after the first bell rings at the start of the school day until the dismissal bell rings – all devices not issued by LCPS will be off and away. That includes lunch and time in between classes. Students may still use phones and other devices before and after school, and on the bus. Students should place their devices in a secure location as instructed or leave them at home.
If students need to contact their parents for an important reason, they can visit the school office. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of our LCPS families in adhering to these new policies. For FAQs, please visit our website: lcps.org/8655

Megan Santos, an athletic trainer at Loudoun County High School, is this month’s SHINE award winner! Ms. Santos was nominated by an LCHS volleyball parent for her commitment to player well-being. The parent wrote in her nomination that “Ms. Santos is one of those unsung heroes who keep our athletes safe, supported and able to compete. Her dedication strengthens not only our players but our entire school community.”
In celebration of her selection as the SHINE monthly winner, Ms. Santos received a gift worth $500 coordinated by LEF and sponsored by Equinix. Rey Cheatham Banks, Equinix’ head of Public Policy and Government Affairs, shared that “Equinix remains committed to building educational pathways into our industry. Sponsoring the SHINE award is just one example of how we demonstrate that commitment to supporting meaningful opportunities for local students in an increasingly digital world."
SHINE – Spotlighting Heroes in Education – is a joint Loudoun Education Foundation and LCPS initiative that recognizes LCPS staff members who go above and beyond in support of LCPS students and the community. Members of the LCPS community – including other staff members, students, and parents – are invited to nominate LCPS staff who shine! Learn more about SHINE:
