The Code of Virginia Section 22.1-79.3:1 was amended in April to address student cell phone and smart device possession and use at school. The new law further defines “smart devices" as any personal electronic device that can connect to the Internet and wirelessly collect, process and transmit data, including smart watches, tablets, personal computers or Macs. Students will still be able to use specific personal technology as required for documented accommodations to support Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), 504 plans, medical needs, or English Learners.
We are asking for your feedback on potential positive and negative impacts, so we can address any gaps and unintended consequences due to aligning LCPS policies with the new state law.
Please provide your feedback by participating in this ThoughtExchange.

We’re back! The LCPS Family Academy returns this fall with new sessions designed to support your child’s academic and social success. Join us for free, virtual workshops that empower families with practical tools, expert advice, and real-world strategies.

The Office of Sustainability concluded the first year of its Green Teams program with a Gallery Walk in which educators and students shared their schools’ eco-friendly projects, which included pollinator gardens, recycling programs, nature trails and more. The Green Teams program empowered educators to incorporate lessons about sustainability into everyday instruction and encouraged students to ask bold questions and tackle real-world challenges. The Green Team program continues this year at participating schools. Learn more: https://www.lcps.org/article/2376844

Loudoun County Public Schools celebrated a milestone as Briar Woods and Tuscarora High Schools hosted a White Coat Ceremony on August 18, marking the second year of the Health and Medical Sciences (HAMSci) Academy!
The event recognized students beginning their four-year journey in health and medical sciences, a program that builds health literacy, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while preparing students for future study and careers in healthcare.
A special thank-you to our partners, the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, the Loudoun Education Foundation, Inova Health System, and Google, for supporting this important program.

Reminder About Parent/Guardian Opt-In for Third-Party Educational Tools and Services
As part of our efforts to provide an engaging learning experience, LCPS uses a range of digital tools and services to support instruction and enhance student learning. Beginning this 2025-2026 school year, LCPS is now required by Google to ask parents to consent, or “opt-in,” for their students to be able to access third-party applications not designed explicitly for K-12 use, which are commonly used in instruction, like YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Translate.
LCPS already limits access to applications that are not required or recommended for learning to the greatest extent possible on LCPS-issued devices and student permissions vary according to their elementary, middle or high school level.
When you complete the Online Verification process for your student(s), you will see a box to opt your student in for these third-party applications for their use in learning. If you have questions, please read the posted Frequently Asked Questions or visit the list of LCPS-approved software.

Parents and guardians: your first step for this school year is logging into ParentVUE to complete Online Verification, which opened today. This important process ensures your student’s information is up to date. Online Verification must also be completed before you can access your student’s bus and class schedule, which will be available on Monday, August 11.
Visit our First Day webpage at www.lcps.org/firstday for everything you need to help you and your student start the school year.
