At the Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Science Fiesta Camp, first and second grade students aren’t just learning about nature, oceanography, metamorphosis or the connections between oral and written language. Camp scholars are experiencing the joy of discovery en español. Through hands-on activities, songs and experiments, students deepen their understanding of science while building friendships and strengthening their Spanish language skills in a fun and engaging environment.
The camp is a full Spanish immersion experience serving as a bridge that reinforces the learning students experience during the school year by providing real-world, hands-on science activities conducted entirely in Spanish. Through these immersive experiences, students apply and expand their Spanish language skills in meaningful ways, deepening comprehension, enriching vocabulary and building confidence as bilingual learners. The camp strengthens their academic language in science, supports biliteracy development, and fosters a deeper understanding of content that will benefit them throughout their educational journey.
Dual Language Immersion programs provide students with meaningful long-term benefits. By enhancing the development of bilingualism, biliteracy and biculturalism at an early age, students grow into global citizens who are prepared for college, career and life in an increasingly interconnected world. Additionally, DLI students develop a deeper understanding of their own language and identity while building greater appreciation and respect for other cultures. Research shows DLI programs improve critical thinking, pattern recognition, creative thinking, problem-solving and divergent thinking skills giving students a lasting academic advantage.
This camp is made possible in large part thanks to a generous donation from Lewis Parker through the Loudoun Education Foundation. A special thanks goes out to our incredible camp teachers who spark curiosity and inspire future scientists!
