LCPS Update Graphic

Dear LCPS Families,

Some of you may have seen the news about a heartbreaking loss in our community today. While details are still emerging, we know that a young person has died, and we recognize the pain and sadness this brings to so many in our community.

My heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy, including the family and friends who are mourning, the students and educators who may be struggling to process this news, and all those who are feeling its impact. We hold them in our thoughts as our community navigates this difficult time.

Moments like this remind us how important it is to recognize and respond to mental health needs. We know that young people may experience a range of emotions when confronted with a loss like this. Some may find it difficult to talk about what they are feeling, while others may need additional support to process their emotions. It is important that we create space for these conversations and remind our children that they do not have to navigate difficult feelings alone.

Our school counselors, psychologists, social workers and other support staff are available to help students who may be struggling with today's news. I encourage families to check in with their children, listen to their concerns and let them know that asking for help is a sign of strength. If your child needs support, please reach out to your school so we can help connect them with the appropriate resources. Additional mental health resources can be found on the LCPS website.

If you are concerned about your child's emotional well-being, please do not hesitate to seek help. And if you believe your child or someone else may be in immediate danger, seek emergency assistance.

As a school division, one of our most important responsibilities is ensuring that every student feels cared for, supported and connected to trusted adults. That responsibility is especially important during painful moments like this. We will continue to support our students and staff and to care for one another as a community.

Please take care of yourselves and one another, stay connected to the people around you, and remember that support is available for anyone who needs it.

With care,

Dr. Aaron Spence
Superintendent
Loudoun County Public Schools
