Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) recently gathered community and business partners for a roundtable discussion focused on the Vocation, Independence, Employment and Work Readiness (VIEW) Transition Academy, an innovative educational initiative designed to prepare students with disabilities for future careers and independent living.
The roundtable provided an opportunity for LCPS staff and community stakeholders to share information and ideas about the Transition Academy, discuss workforce needs and explore how schools and local partners can work together to expand opportunities for students. Participants asked questions and engaged in conversations about workforce development and inclusion, including the benefits of hiring individuals with disabilities and the critical skills students need to succeed in today's workforce.
These discussions build on nearly two years of planning and development for the Transition Academy. During that time, LCPS staff have identified curriculum and staffing needs, collaborated with architects and developers to design a facility that supports both programmatic and student needs, visited similar facilities, held listening sessions and engaged stakeholders to better understand workforce demands. The roundtable served as a follow-up to an earlier session held in May 2025, with a specific focus on strengthening partnerships that will support the academy's success and expand opportunities for students.
The VIEW Transition Academy, anticipated to open for the 2028-29 school year, will be the first facility of its kind in LCPS and the region. Designed specifically to support high school students with disabilities, the academy will offer specialized Career and Technical Education (CTE), work-readiness training and independent living experiences. Students will have access to 15 career pathways aligned with workforce needs and individual interests, helping them build the skills necessary for future employment and independence. In addition, career exploration opportunities will be available for middle school students with disabilities to support a successful transition to high school and future career planning.
“The VIEW Transition Academy represents a unique and inspiring commitment to inclusion and future success,” said Superintendent Aaron Spence. “By providing job skills training and life skills instruction, this innovative facility will empower students with disabilities to prepare for meaningful careers and life after high school. At the same time, it creates valuable partnerships with local businesses, helping them connect with a motivated workforce. The benefits extend far beyond the classroom, strengthening our entire community by creating more opportunities for every individual to contribute, succeed and thrive. We are excited about the possibilities this academy will create and the lasting impact it will have for students, business partners and our community for years to come.”
As planning for the Transition Academy continues, LCPS looks forward to expanding partnerships with local businesses, nonprofit organizations and community stakeholders who share a commitment to creating inclusive opportunities and strengthening the future workforce of Loudoun County.
