Trailside Middle School History and Government teacher Dr. Marcus White has been awarded a Fulbright Specialist Program award from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
As part of the award, Dr. White will travel to Uruguay in October, where, for a few weeks, he will conduct educational and training activities focused on the mental and physical development of young people and its connection to the psychology of exercise and athletics. His work will take place through the Secretaria Nacional del Deporte, Uruguay’s official government agency for managing national sports policies and physical activity.
Dr. White brings a unique blend of experience to the opportunity. In addition to earning both a master’s degree and a doctorate in education, he also holds a master’s degree in physiology and health science. His academic background, combined with a personal interest in the relationship between youth development and exercise, made him an ideal candidate for the program.
While in Uruguay, Dr. White will work with schools and athletic coaches to better understand the mental and physical development of individuals across different stages of life. His presentations and training sessions will focus on helping coaches and educators think like teachers, while exploring the psychology of exercise and athletics from pre-adolescence through adulthood and into older age.
Dr. White said Uruguay has become increasingly focused on public health due to concerns about hypertension and heart disease. As an example, he mentioned public health policies implemented in the nation’s capital, Montevideo, which prohibited restaurants from immediately providing salt shakers on tables.
He sees similarities between Uruguay’s efforts and health initiatives in the United States during the 1970s.
“Uruguay is trying to create a culture of healthiness,” Dr. White said. He noted that former President Jimmy Carter helped popularize jogging by making fitness a part of his daily routine, encouraging more Americans to embrace healthy lifestyles.
For Dr. White, the Fulbright award is not only a professional achievement but also a personal milestone. He said two educators made a lasting impact on him by challenging him to reach his potential. These experiences continue to influence his work in the classroom. Dr. White hopes his experiences and accomplishments will inspire his own students to strive for excellence.
