LCPS students have more opportunities to compete this school year with the addition of three new athletic programs: girls flag football, boys volleyball and girls wrestling.

Girls flag football and boys volleyball are already underway this fall, with all LCPS high schools participating. More than 500 students are competing in the two new programs, including 332 students in girls flag football and 194 in boys volleyball.

The new programs were added in response to student interest and requests for these sports. Following the review process as outlined in Policy 8350, the Office of Athletics and Activities surveyed principals, evaluated budget implications and submitted a recommendation to the Superintendent for consideration. The School Board ultimately approved the inclusion of these sports in the FY27 budget.

Boys volleyball has been sponsored by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) for several years. Girls flag football is not currently a VHSL-sponsored sport, but it is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country and will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

LCPS also partnered with the Washington Commanders to help launch girls flag football. The Commanders provided uniforms, equipment and funding to help offset the cost of adding the sport.

Girls wrestling will begin this winter, providing another new athletic opportunity for LCPS students during the 2026-27 school year.

Funding for the three new athletic programs was approved as part of the FY27 budget.
