LCPS middle school students from a summer camp, led by LCPS partner Orblynx Academy, had the unique opportunity of visiting Amazon Headquarters, known as HQ2, in Arlington, VA, on Friday, July 31. The visit served as the capstone experience of the two‑week STEM and environmental sustainability camp, designed to help students connect classroom learning with real‑world innovation.

During the visit to HQ2, students maneuvered a mini-robot to solve simulated environmental scenarios. This activity allowed students to apply their STEM knowledge in a practical, problem‑solving context while exploring how technology can support environmental protection.

Students also heard from Amazon staff about the company’s sustainable practices. Speakers shared examples such as using reclaimed water to cool data centers and Amazon’s commitment to expanding the use of renewable energy across its operations. These conversations offered students a firsthand look at how a large company such as Amazon integrates sustainability into daily decision‑making and long‑term planning. The students also learned how STEM skills can lead to meaningful careers in sustainability.

The visit included a tour of Amazon HQ2, a facility recognized for its sustainable construction and design. LCPS students and staff explored portions of the building known for lower energy costs compared to similar structures and for the use of native plants throughout its gardens, roofs and terraces.

This visit highlighted Amazon’s existing partnership with LCPS. Amazon provides support for a variety of LCPS-connected initiatives, such as Think Big spaces and collaborations with the Loudoun Education Foundation to distribute weekend meal packs through its Fueled program. Experiences like the HQ2 visit strengthen this partnership and inspire students to imagine how they can contribute to a more sustainable future.
