Partnership Provides Students in Need with Eyeglasses, Eliminating Barrier to Education

Earlier this school year, the VSP Eyes of Hope Mobile Clinic visited Dominion High School and provided free eye exams and glasses to 60 students from Sugarland Elementary School, Seneca Ridge Middle School and Dominion High School. This visit was supported by the Communities In Schools (CIS) program, which connects families with resources that help reduce barriers to education.

For some participating students, this was their first eye exam and their first pair of glasses. Others already wore glasses but needed updated prescriptions. School-based family liaisons identified these students and confirmed with their parents that additional support was needed.

Volunteer nurses and support staff conducted initial screenings, followed by comprehensive eye exams from a volunteer doctor. The fully equipped mobile clinic included an optical finishing lab capable of producing lenses on site. Students could choose from a variety of popular frame styles and brands, and in most cases, they went home the same day with brand‑new glasses. The students – especially the younger ones – were thrilled to receive their new eyewear.

The 2025/26 school year served as the pilot year for the LCPS Communities In Schools (CIS) program at Sugarland, Seneca Ridge and Dominion. CIS is a nationally recognized model that places site coordinators directly in schools to identify needs, connect families with resources, and remove barriers to academic and personal success. The program works closely with LCPS teams, including Unified Mental Health Teams, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), family liaisons and Student Services, to coordinate services, provide individualized support, engage families and strengthen connections to community resources.

This opportunity for students to receive free eye exams and glasses shows how powerful community partnerships can be in supporting the whole student,” said Renee Dawson, Director of Family and Community Engagement.
