This year’s PEER conference was a powerful reminder of how student leaders are helping build stronger, more connected school communities across the division. Nearly 250 students from 15 high schools, as well as 40 PEER sponsors, school social workers and school counselors, attended the annual event. The Department of Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility shared a keynote that highlighted the power of finding common ground and building a sense of belonging. Later in the day, PEER groups showcased their successful outreach efforts, including wellness weeks, field days, and the development of videos promoting messages of support and inclusion. PEER, or Positive Experiences in Educational Relationships, is a specialized LCPS high school class that trains students to mentor and support their peers emotionally, socially and academically. The PEER program is facilitated by the Office of Student Mental Health Services.
