Dear LCPS Family,
We are extremely saddened by yesterday's horrific shooting at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. Acts of violence in places of learning are heartbreaking, and we mourn with those affected by this tragedy.
There are also reports that this attack may have targeted ODU’s ROTC program. If confirmed, this adds another painful dimension to an already tragic situation. Because one of our schools is home to an NJROTC program, we understand that this aspect of the incident may create an additional layer of concern for some members of our community, particularly students, families, and staff connected to that program. We stand in support of our students and the service members who dedicate themselves to serving our country, and we hold in our thoughts those in the ROTC community and others who may feel especially impacted by this event.
We are also aware of another extremely disturbing incident reported the same day in Michigan, where a vehicle was intentionally driven into a synagogue. Seeing two tragic and violent events unfold in a single day is incredibly upsetting, particularly for young people who may be trying to make sense of what they are hearing or seeing in the news. Acts of violence directed at schools, places of worship, or at people because of who they are or what they believe, including acts rooted in antisemitism or other forms of hate, are especially troubling and run counter to the values of safety, respect, and belonging that we work to foster in our schools and throughout our community.
While these incidents did not occur in our immediate area, we understand that events like this can still be upsetting and concerning for students, families, and staff. Schools should always be places where young people feel safe, supported and cared for. In LCPS, we remain firmly committed to maintaining safe and supportive environments across all of our schools.
Our counselors and support staff are available to assist any student who may be struggling to process difficult news or feeling anxious about what they have heard. Families and students are encouraged to reach out to their school’s counseling office if support would be helpful. Resources for talking with your child about difficult topics are also available on the LCPS Crisis Response and Mental Health Resources webpages.
We also encourage everyone in our community to continue to practice the principle of “see something, say something.” If you notice something concerning, please report it to school staff or local authorities so it can be addressed quickly.
Finally, we are grateful for the courage of those who responded to these incidents and for the first responders who acted quickly to protect others. The LCPS community stands with the Monarch community at Old Dominion University and with all those grieving and affected by these acts of violence.
Please continue to keep the victims, their families, and the entire ODU community in your thoughts.
Sincerely,
Aaron Spence, EdD
Superintendent
