On February 13, Aldie Elementary School welcomed six very special guests, Snowball, Daisy, Archie, Sky, Kai and Gracie, for a heartwarming “For the Love of Reading” celebration. Six therapy dogs. Three literacy stations. One unforgettable morning of connection.

From the moment paws crossed the threshold, excitement filled the building. Students rotated through three interactive literacy stations designed to spark curiosity, creativity and connection.

In the kindergarten classroom, students gathered for a read-aloud with Mrs. Varachi, Aldie’s librarian. They met the therapy dogs and their handlers, asked thoughtful questions and learned how to respectfully interact with their furry reading buddies.

The Music and Art Room transformed into a cozy reading haven. Students paired up to read dog-themed fiction and nonfiction books, collecting fun facts from Fetch the Facts and Tales with Tails to later share on the morning show. Literacy met research and public speaking in an authentic and engaging way.

In the Grande Hall, creativity took center stage. Students designed paws-itive creations such as bookmarks and decorated picture frames for their event photos. They also wrote heartfelt notes to the therapy dog handlers. These notes will be compiled into a keepsake book, a lasting reminder of a joyful day.

The morning ran smoothly thanks to careful planning, safety guidelines and the dedication of Aldie staff and volunteers. Every student had the opportunity to visit each station and spend meaningful time reading with the therapy dogs.

More than a literacy event, the celebration highlighted the power of connection. Students read with confidence, created with joy and experienced firsthand how supportive environments help learning flourish.

At Aldie Elementary, belonging and engagement are more than priorities. They are everyday practices.

One question remains: When can the dogs come back?
