Dear LCPS Families, Staff, and Community Members,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you as this tragic week comes to a close. As you know, one of our students was struck and killed on their way to school this week. This devastating loss has shaken our entire school division, and there are simply no words that can fully capture the sorrow we are feeling.
As Superintendent of Schools, I am heartbroken for this student’s family and loved ones. Our thoughts and condolences are with them during this unimaginable time. I know this tragedy is also weighing heavily on classmates, educators, staff, and our broader community.
In moments like these, it is important that we come together to support one another. Grief looks different for everyone, and there is no single way to process such a loss. I encourage families to check in with their children, listen with patience, and seek support when needed. Our schools remain committed to caring for the emotional well-being of our students and staff as we navigate this difficult time together.
Loudoun County Public Schools offers mental health and grief support resources for students, families, and staff on our website, including guidance on talking with children about loss, coping strategies, and accessing additional support. All LCPS schools also have mental health professionals available during school hours to support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs and to help families connect with resources. Additional support available outside of school hours can be found on the LCPS Crisis Response webpage and Mental Health Resources.
Thank you for holding this family, and one another, in your thoughts during this time of mourning.
Aaron Spence
Superintendent of Schools
Loudoun County Public Schools
