The roar of the crowd, the squeak of sneakers on the gymnasium floor, and the electric energy of competition filled the Sterling Middle School gym on December 7 for the inaugural Club Deportivo Sterling/LCPS Futsal Final. The event was the culmination of a fantastic season of the free after-school soccer club, made possible through our Community Schools initiative and partnership with the nonprofit organization, Club Deportivo Sterling.
This collaboration brought the excitement of soccer to students at Sully, Guilford, Sterling and Rolling Ridge elementary schools, many of whom may not otherwise have had the opportunity to participate in organized athletics. By introducing weekly competitive futsal (indoor soccer) games, coaches Jose Urquizo and Mario Salazar created a program that went beyond teaching ball-handling skills. It fostered leadership, encouraged teamwork and served as a strong motivator and attendance incentive for students.
The event began with a spirited Consolation Game at 3:00 p.m., featuring a hard-fought contest between Guilford and Sterling Elementary Schools. While Guilford won the consolation game, both teams showed incredible sportsmanship and determination, leaving everything on the court.
The Futsal Final concluded with the much-anticipated Championship Game at 4:00 p.m. Sully and Rolling Ridge Elementary battled for the top title, with Sully emerging victorious. The skill and passion displayed by these young athletes were truly inspiring!
A celebration ceremony followed the game, during which students received recognition and medals, while families enjoyed pizza and refreshments. The gymnasium was filled with cheering parents, siblings, teachers and community members, highlighting the strong family engagement and sense of community this program was designed to foster.
The Club Deportivo Sterling/LCPS Futsal Final was more than just a championship. It was a powerful demonstration of what happens when a community invests in its students. Congratulations to all the players for a fantastic season and a memorable final night! Three cheers to its future and continued growth that will enrich the lives of our students!
