The Loudoun County School Board held a meeting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, in the School Board Meeting Room at the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Administrative Offices, 21000 Education Court in Ashburn.

Work Session

The Department of Communications and Community Engagement shared an update on the Division of Family and Community Engagement’s (FACE) efforts since its establishment, highlighting key initiatives to support students, families and schools. The presentation included division-wide strategies, such as family liaison support, translation and interpretation services, Family Academy, FACE Teacher Cohort, Communities in Schools and Community Schools. It also outlined the division’s collaborative approach to aligning engagement efforts through school-based visits, cross-departmental collaboration and enhanced online resources, thereby strengthening family partnerships and enhancing student success, reflecting the FACE mission of Every Family. Every Child. Every Day.

The Department of Teaching and Learning shared updates on mathematics course progressions, instructional practices, and school-based supports, with emphasis on the implementation of new curriculum resources and the impact of Virginia House Bill 2686. The presentation also outlined ongoing efforts to support accelerated learners and gather feedback to inform future instructional planning.

The Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem were performed by the Loudoun County High School Chamber Choir.

Recognitions

One LCPS Spotlight: Inclusive Math Practices at Freedom High School. The presenters discussed the acknowledgment of the achievement gap and the steps taken to address it within two of our major subgroups: students with disabilities and English Learner students.

Superintendent’s Report

Highlights of the report include:

  • School Nutrition Services hosted their 2nd Annual Food Show, showcasing 30 new breakfast bites and savory lunch creations. Some recipes were crafted by LCPS students.

  • Twelve LCPS schools earned Purple Star designation for the 2025-2026 School Year. The Purple Star designation recognizes the school for outstanding support to military-connected students and families.

  • North Star School celebrated for work in strengthening non-traditional education.

  • Division Counsel Wesley Allen, recognized as a Leader in the Law by Virginia Lawyers Weekly.

Public Comment

Community members participated virtually and in person to provide the School Board with comments on a range of topics.

Action Items

There were no Action Items addressed by the School Board.

Information Items

The Board addressed several information items, including:

  1. The LCPS Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) provided a quarterly update to the School Board.

  2. The School Board discussed a staff recommendation that the School Board request $17,491,000 from the FY25 County’s year-end fund balance for identified needs.

  3. Human Resources and Talent Development (HRTD) briefed the School Board on the tentative inaugural agreements for the Certified and Non-Certified Bargaining Units, as well as the next steps for ratification by the Union and the School Board.

  4. Student Services Committee recommended the deletion of Policy 8-19, Dismissal During the School Day. The information of Policy 8-19 was incorporated into the current Policy 8140, Student Attendance Requirements and Procedures, which was adopted on October 24, 2023.

  5. Student Services Committee provided an update on the revision to Policy 8155, School Assignment.

  6. The Department of Support Services discussed special permission requests for certain rising eighth, ninth and tenth-grade students affected by the 2026-2027 Attendance Zone changes.

  7. Dr. Deans presented an update on the status of the Equity Committee’s current structure and next steps for alignment with LCPS policies and goals.

The Board then went into a Closed Session.
