Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) announces the launch of the LCPS Recovery School program, which is now officially named the Recovery, Inspiration, Strength, and Empowerment (R.I.S.E.) Academy.

The R.I.S.E. Academy is a specialized educational program designed to support high school students in recovery from substance use disorders. This innovative initiative provides a safe, structured and compassionate environment where students can continue their academic journey while receiving the support they need to thrive in recovery.

The R.I.S.E. Academy, which is co-located at the North Star School in Leesburg, offers students the opportunity to earn their high school diplomas while benefiting from additional layers of care. The school is staffed by LCPS educators and professionals trained to address both academic and emotional needs, ensuring students are equipped for long-term success.

Intake assessments help staff understand each student’s position in their recovery journey and tailor support for them. Students meet daily with members of the Academy’s mental health team – counselors, social workers, or student assistance specialists – who are guided by a clinical coordinator. In addition, the R.I.S.E. Academy is supported by community-based mental health and substance use prevention providers who offer a variety of wellness activities.

On the academic side, students follow a schedule that mirrors their home school’s curriculum, so that return to their home school, if the student chooses, can be seamless. The R.I.S.E. Academy is staffed with a full team of licensed educators, including core subject teachers, special education staff and support personnel. Small class sizes ensure that students have the opportunity to excel while receiving specialized support.

The R.I.S.E. Academy also supports families. Monthly family nights and virtual or in-person informational sessions ensure that parents are equipped to continue the work at home.

“This program is a direct reflection of LCPS’ deep commitment to student wellness and equity,” said Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. “We recognize that recovery is a personal and courageous journey, and we are proud to provide a space where students can heal, grow, feel seen and supported while working towards achieving their goals.”

The R.I.S.E. Academy is part of a broader LCPS initiative to address substance use through education, prevention and intervention. It complements existing efforts such as awareness campaigns, one-on-one student support and community partnerships focused on youth wellness.

An open house will be held later this fall, featuring a Ribbon Joining Ceremony and an opportunity for families and community members to tour the space and meet the staff. Details will be shared in the coming weeks. For more information about the R.I.S.E. Academy, see the school’s website.
