Loudoun students leveled up this summer through the innovative PROPEL and Level Up programs, hands-on learning experiences designed to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders. These summer opportunities were specifically designed for elementary and middle school students who are underrepresented in STEM fields, providing access to engaging, challenging activities that sparked curiosity and built confidence.
Hosted at the Academies of Loudoun and Sterling Middle School, the PROPEL and Level Up summer camps empowered students to solve complex problems in groups of all sizes, strengthen their communication skills and explore a wide range of STEM careers. From robotics and engineering to computer science and real-world problem solving, each camp session was packed with collaborative learning and student-driven discovery.
Early exposure to STEM makes a difference. According to the National Science Foundation, students who engage in STEM learning experiences before high school are more likely to pursue STEM-related coursework and careers. Programs like PROPEL and Level Up help bridge opportunity gaps and ignite a lifelong interest in these fields.
At the heart of PROPEL and Level Up is a mission to help students develop high-level reasoning skills and key behaviors associated with academic success. Activities were intentionally designed to enhance the 5C’s: Collaboration, Communication, Contribution, Creation and Critical Thinking, while preparing students for the rigorous middle and high school coursework ahead, including honors, AP and IB programs.
Both camps concluded with an end-of-camp showcase where students presented their learning and discoveries to families, community partners and staff. These celebrations highlighted student growth, creativity and collaboration and offered a powerful glimpse into the bright futures ahead.
A special thank-you to our PROPEL and Level Up business partners Northrop Grumman and Jack Kent Cooke Foundation whose support helped make Summer 2025 a STEM-sational success.
By challenging students to think critically, work collaboratively and envision a future in STEM, the PROPEL and Level Up programs continue to help LCPS students soar to new academic heights, one level at a time.
