Mountain View Elementary School hosted a different kind of career fair on Wednesday, May 28. The Adventure Awaits Outdoor Learning Day introduced students to exciting professions that take place beyond the walls of an office or school. From veterinarians and entomologists to firefighters and police officers, students explored a variety of outdoor careers through engaging presentations and hands-on experiences.
Among the businesses in the main gym, Great County Farms showcased the work they do with animals on the farm, including working with baby goats, two of which joined the event. Also, in the main gym, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services showed confiscated animal hides and provided information about investigations into wildlife crimes.
Inside the library, students discovered the world of veterinary science and animal care, insect research, and plant health. Meanwhile, in the hallways, a local firefighter donned his gear and demonstrated the tools and protective equipment used in emergency situations.
Other organizations represented ranged from state and county agencies, such as the Virginia Cooperative Extension in Loudoun and Loudoun Water and Loudoun Sheriff’s Office. Commercial and nonprofit entities included arborists, outdoor camps, lawn and sprinkler services, roof and home repair.
School counselor Adria Cancelosi emphasized the importance of expanding career horizons at an early age, saying, "The goal of the Outdoor Learning and Career Fair is to get the kids learning about jobs they typically might not know about. It was really focusing on new career clusters – particularly in the energy and natural resources sectors. We wanted them to learn about jobs that not everyone has."
In LCPS, career conversations begin in kindergarten and continue through high school. By introducing students to a variety of career paths, schools encourage exploration, helping young minds envision futures shaped by curiosity and passion.
