Kindergarten students at Potowmack and Sanders Corner elementary schools recently celebrated a milestone—the completion of their first year in the Loudoun County Public Schools Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program.
The bilingual end-of-year celebration recognized not only language acquisition but also the development of biliteracy and bicultural understanding. Students demonstrated their growth through performances in both English and Spanish. Students received a certificate and medal to celebrate months of learning, progress and meaningful cross-cultural experiences.
The event also marked a moment to look ahead with optimism and purpose. Families and guests observed how students are helping to shape a future where language serves as a bridge—not a barrier—equipping them to thrive in a connected and diverse world.
Now in its second year, the LCPS DLI program supports academic achievement while fostering global readiness. Through daily, immersive instruction in English and Spanish, students build foundational literacy, numeracy and collaboration skills while embracing the rich diversity of their classrooms.
Research shows that dual-language immersion programs improve academic outcomes, increase cognitive flexibility and strengthen cultural awareness. In LCPS, DLI students are expanding their vocabulary and developing a deeper sense of identity, confidence and respect for others.
As parting gifts, families received bilingual summer journals to encourage continued learning and language engagement over the break.
These students will enter first grade with stronger voices, broader skills and an expanding worldview, while a new group of kindergartners begins their journey toward becoming global citizens through language.
