Together In Remembrance: Honoring Memorial Day Through Learning, Service and Collaboration. A picture of a folded American flag is on the left.

More than 3,100 first-grade students from 36 elementary schools across Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) participated in the second annual Together in Remembrance event—a divisionwide Memorial Day initiative that blends service, learning, civics and community partnerships.

Organized by the Division of Family and Community Engagement (FACE), the event gave first-graders, who were joined by fourth- and fifth-grade buddies, Veterans, active duty service members, LCPS staff and community volunteers, a meaningful opportunity to honor Memorial Day by building wooden American flags. Students received flag-building kits and patriotic materials and assembled the flags with care and pride.

Teaching and Learning staff ensured curriculum was front and center as students learned about the origins of Memorial Day, the importance of honoring fallen service members and the diverse ways communities across the country commemorate the day. Civic support and participation came in the form of collaboration with veteran-owned Flags of Valor and AFCOM Potomac Chapter and through support from over 20 local sponsors—including Salesforce, HITT, Paperfish Creative, Albireo Energy and TechoGuard.

The flags are now displayed in schools, donated to Veterans or taken home by students as symbols of remembrance and respect.

Renee Dawson, Director of Family and Community Engagement, shared: “What began as a simple conversation with Loudoun Economic Development and Flags of Valor evolved into something truly powerful. Together in Remembrance is more than an activity—it’s a moment that brings together students, Veterans and the community to learn, reflect and give thanks. Events like this build civic understanding, enhance student learning and create lasting memories rooted in respect, empathy and gratitude.”

Together in Remembrance reflects the LCPS mission to empower every student to make meaningful contributions to the world—through knowledge, compassion and community connection.
