Tuscarora High School hosted a heartfelt celebration on Thursday, May 22, 2025, honoring its 10th graduating class of AVID seniors. The evening event brought together students, families, educators and administrators to recognize the accomplishments of the Class of 2025 and the lasting impact of the AVID program at Tuscarora.

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college and career readiness system designed to close opportunity gaps and prepare students—many of whom are first-generation college-bound or in the academic middle—for success in rigorous courses and postsecondary pathways. Tuscarora High School is currently the only school in Loudoun County Public Schools offering the AVID program.

The event highlighted individual student achievements and the continued growth of the AVID program, which has now graduated 232 students since its inception at Tuscarora. The Class of 2025 posted an impressive average GPA of 3.51, having completed 21 Advanced Placement courses and 27 dual enrollment courses during their high school careers. These seniors received acceptances to 14 in-state universities and 17 out-of-state institutions. Some students will also be serving in the military or pursuing skilled trades such as electrical work.

The celebration featured a family-style dinner followed by the presentation of AVID cords signifying each student's successful completion of the program. The ceremony underscored the AVID approach to college and career preparation, which is rooted in the WICOR framework—writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading. This model supports academic success, builds personal accountability and develops leadership skills essential for lifelong achievement.

Tuscarora’s AVID program aligns with statewide trends showing that AVID seniors in Virginia consistently outperform their peers nationwide in key areas such as GPA, course rigor and college enrollment. According to AVID's 2024 Virginia Snapshot, 82 percent of AVID seniors took at least one rigorous course, 97 percent were accepted into four-year colleges and 96 percent met four-year college entrance requirements.

This year’s celebration was especially meaningful as it marks the final year for Tuscarora Principal Pamela Croft, who will retire at the end of the school year. Her outstanding support and passion for AVID helped shape the program into what it is today. She worked closely alongside staff and students to ensure the program remained a thriving, student-centered experience that fostered college and career readiness.

As the only AVID site in LCPS, Tuscarora High School remains a beacon of opportunity and determination, continuing to equip students with the skills and support necessary to thrive in college, career and beyond.
