LCPS School Counseling Services is dedicated to supporting School Counselors in building evidence-based practices that support student well-being and achievement. The “Star System” is a comprehensive school counseling program, based on the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. This evidence-based framework is integral to the school’s academic mission and has been proven to have a significant positive impact on student achievement, attendance, and discipline. Comprehensive School Counseling
programming is not additional work, it is the work. The model ensures all students in LCPS have equitable access to programs that are comprehensive in scope, results-oriented in design, and developmental in nature. LCPS School Counselors provide services utilizing a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) to include a focus on college and career readiness, academic achievement, social-emotional, and mental health wellness.
The STAR system also provides a clear pathway for school counselors to commit to ONE LCPS Strategic Plan for Excellence to ensure each and every student reaches their full potential while empowering all students to make meaningful contributions to the world. More specifically, School Counselors delivery of a comprehensive program supports Strategic Goal 1: Empowered Students: Students will be at the center of our work- valuing all students’ hopes and dreams and preparing them to make meaningful contributions to the world.
Developing and maintaining an ASCA-aligned comprehensive school counseling program directly aligns with Standard 2- Program Planning and Management in the School Counselor evaluation. We encourage school administrators to collaborate with their school counseling team and The Office of School Counseling Services to better understand the components of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program and participate in planning, reflection and to support the School Counselor evaluation process.
School Counseling Services is committed to providing continual professional development opportunities regarding comprehensive programming. Throughout the year, all School Counseling departments demonstrate their completion of comprehensive components in December and June of each school year. Each June, a star is assigned to each school’s counseling department, which correlates with the completion of components listed below. We are so proud of the work LCPS school counselors do, and this is a wonderful way for us to celebrate their commitment. We are pleased to announce 85% of our school counseling programs earned a star and we are so excited to share that your school was one of them!
Your School Counseling Department earned a GOLD STARfor the 2025-2026 school year! Congratulations! We are so proud of all your accomplishments! Keep up the amazing work that you are doing for your students, school, and community!
