Sugarland Elementary is thrilled to open its doors to our youngest community members! We are inviting families with children ages 0 to 7 to join our FREE "FIRST 10 Play & Learn" sessions—a wonderful opportunity to connect with the school and support your child’s development through the power of play.

These sessions are specifically designed for children and their caregivers, offering an engaging environment where learning feels like fun. The program is built on key educational strategies that help young children master math, literacy, and social skills alongside their trusted adults.

What is Play & Learn?

The FIRST 10 initiative recognizes the crucial role the first ten years of life play in a child's development. Our sessions provide a hands-on approach to learning, focusing on five basic, research-backed strategies that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine:

  1. Maximize Love, Manage Stress: Focusing on warm and positive parenting.

  2. Talk, Sing, and Point: Supporting oral language development.

  3. Count, Group, and Compare: Promoting early math skills.

  4. Explore Through Movement and Play: Encouraging strong bodies and active imaginations.

  5. Read and Discuss Stories: Boosting cognitive and language development.

Our First Session

The first Play & Learn session on October 8th was a vibrant success! Centered around the book The Color Monster, families explored the world of emotions through play. Children engaged in hands-on activities that connected colors to feelings, practicing early sorting and grouping skills (Count, Group, and Compare) and using movement to express different moods (Explore Through Movement and Play). Caregivers left with practical tools for encouraging positive emotional vocabulary and development in their children.

If you missed the fun, don't worry—we have three more exciting sessions coming up that you won't want to miss!
