Inclusive Schools Week

Inclusive Schools Week is held each year during the first full week in December. This is a time to celebrate our inclusive culture in our diverse community here at Little River. This week highlights the many ways that we can unite as a school community, regardless of disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language, or any other trait.

The 2025 theme, “Children First,” is rooted in the powerful Maasai greeting, Casserian Engeri, which translates to “And how are the children?” This traditional salutation reflects the Maasai’s deep commitment to ensuring that their children are well, recognizing that the well-being of children reflects the health and future of the entire society.

Putting Children First means prioritizing every student’s right to learn in an environment that supports their diverse needs, embraces their unique abilities, and fosters a sense of belonging. It means recognizing that when schools are designed to support students with disabilities, they become better places for all learners.

Creating more inclusive learning environments, dismantling barriers, and promoting equity is crucial for student success and community growth.

Inclusion is vital because:

  • Ensures Equity: Provides all students equal access to resources and opportunities, regardless of background or ability, reducing academic disparities.

  • Boosts Achievement: Promotes a sense of belonging and acceptance, which enhances student engagement, active participation, and improved learning outcomes.

  • Fosters Well-being & Safety: Creates a culture of respect and empathy, significantly reducing bullying and discrimination for all students.

  • Prepares for Life: Exposes students to diverse perspectives, enhancing critical thinking and preparing them to thrive as compassionate, responsible citizens in a diverse world.

Throughout the week, we’ll honor the diverse backgrounds and experiences of students, educators, and families. Classroom activities, along with daily morning meetings, will highlight the importance of fostering inclusive environments where every voice is heard, valued, and respected.
