A Community Dedicated to the Success of All Learners
Dear Hutchison Farm Elementary Community,
It is with great pleasure that I serve the students, staff, and community as the principal of Hutchison Farm Elementary (HFES). My tenure at HFES began in 2010, and since then, I have been privileged to watch many of our families have multiple children attend our school throughout the years. Personally, watching our students begin kindergarten here on the first day of school and then years later watching the same students graduate from high school, has truly been a joy!!
My career in education began within Loudoun County Public Schools in 1995. I was a third-grade teacher at both Ashburn and Lowes Island Elementary for a total of six years. In 2001, I was an Assistant Principal at Algonkian Elementary and in January 2005, I was appointed as the principal. In 2010, I transitioned to HFES as Principal.
I attended George Mason University where I received both a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. Later, I extended my education through Shenandoah University where I received a master’s degree in Educational Leadership.
At Hutchison Farm Elementary, we are dedicated to the success of all learners. This includes students and staff alike. We are committed to a growth mindset, a belief in developing our abilities as educators and empowering our students to believe in themselves. We are committed to the establishment of a nurturing and safe environment in which students' individuality and self-worth are valued and where all students and staff are treated with respect.
Students are encouraged and supported to reach their full potential through effective academic instruction and social problem-solving skills. Students will be equipped with the tools necessary to achieve success in our ever-changing society and will be empowered to make meaningful contributions to the world.
The partnership between home and school benefits our students in all aspects of their education. I encourage you to be an active participant of Hutchison Farm Elementary, either through participation in our PTA or volunteering in your child’s classroom. We want to engage our HFES families in the work that our students are doing in the classroom.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I look forward to a school year full of observable academic, developmental, and social growth in all our students.
Respectfully,
Heidi E. Smith, Principal
It is with great pleasure that I serve as the assistant principal at Hutchison Farm Elementary School. This is my 22nd year in Loudoun County Public Schools and my 17th year as an administrator. I hope to be able to contribute positively to the growth and development of every child at our school!
It is a pleasure to work with a dedicated and competent staff, supportive families, and wonderful students at Hutchison Farm Elementary School.
Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance and/or support to you and your child at school.

Assistant Principal, Carlene Lydic
Dean, Nellie Adams
Mrs. Adams is looking forward to continuing her role as Elementary Dean this year here at Hutchison Farm. As part of the administrative team, she will continue to work closely with Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Lydic to build a school community full of enriching learning experiences for students, families, and staff.
This is Mrs. Adams' 17th year here at Hutchison Farm! During her first seven years with our school, Mrs. Adams taught first grade. Since that time, she has worked in administration--not only at Hutchison Farm, but also at Little River and Arcola Elementary Schools. Before that for 18 years she was a child care specialist and program director with another county in northern Virginia. Mrs. Adams has experience as a facilitator for parent and teacher workshops. Mrs. Adams' undergraduate degree is from Penn State University in Elementary Education and her Masters of Education is from George Mason University with an emphasis on Curriculum and Instruction.
When she is not here at Hutchison Farm, you might see Mrs. Adams around town--she enjoys taking her dogs for walks and reading on her porch with Mr. Adams. Both of Mrs. Adams' daughters went to Hutchison Farm, JML Middle School, Freedom High School and are graduates of Virginia Tech!
Hello! I am Lisa Taylor, the Special Education Dean and I am very excited to be at Hutchison Farm Elementary School as the Special Education Dean this year. I started my educational career as a special education teacher assistance and then special education kindergarten teacher at Hillside Elementary School. I then moved to Stone Hill Middle School where I primarily taught Math at all three grade levels. My family moved from Ashburn to Western Loudoun, and I transferred to Harmony Middle School. While at Harmony, I transitioned from the Math classroom to the English classroom.
My bachelor’s degree is from Penn State University, I then earned a master’s in special education from George Mason University. I also hold two Professional Studies Certificates, one in Administration and Supervisor from Shenandoah University and the other in Education Assessment, Evaluation & Data Literacy from George Mason University.
I live in Waterford with my husband, Brian, and our two dogs, Marne and Waylon. We have one daughter, Ellison, that graduated from Briar Woods High School and Penn State University. Some of the things that I enjoy doing in my free time include being with my family, reading and traveling.
