As an LCPS employee, you are automatically enrolled in Basic Group Term Life Insurance through the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). The value of your life insurance is 2 times your annual salary.

Additional term life insurance at group rates is available to VRS members as an optional benefit. Members may purchase additional coverage, up to 8 times the employee’s annual salary. Spouse and child(ren) coverage is also available (note that coverage must be consistent with the option level elected by the employee).

Guaranteed Issue: If you enroll within the first 31 days of employment in a full-time position, employee coverage is guaranteed up to Option 4 which is 4 times the employee’s annual salary or a value of $400,000, whichever is less. Spousal coverage is guaranteed at Option 1 which is .5 times the employee’s annual salary. Children are guaranteed up to Option 4 which is $30,000 per child.

Should you choose to enroll or make changes after your first 31 days of eligibility, an Evidence of Insurability form is required. Coverage is no longer guaranteed and could be denied.

Coverage Options: You can select one of eight coverage options as shown in the Calculation Worksheet.

Premiums: Premiums are based on the employee's age (and the age of the employee's spouse, if spousal coverage is elected), annual salary and amount of elected coverage. Rates for child(ren) are a flat rate based on the amount of coverage purchased for the child(ren). Premiums are deducted through convenient payroll deductions.
