LCPS Intramurals

Middle School Intramural Sports

About the Program

The LCPS Middle School Intramural Sports Program promotes lifelong health and active lifestyles by providing students with positive, recreational sports experiences. Through structured after-school activities, the program creates opportunities for physical development, teamwork and personal growth—supporting both school-based goals and the division’s broader mission to enhance student well-being.

By making recreational sports accessible and inclusive, LCPS intramurals offer every student a chance to stay active, build confidence and enjoy the benefits of friendly competition.

Eligibility and Registration

Intramural sports are open to all eligible middle school students enrolled at the school offering the program. Students must be present and in good standing on the day of each tournament, as determined by school administration.

To participate, students must complete all registration forms online through the LCPS activity registration website.

There are:

  • No tryouts

  • No coaches

  • No participation fees

Students may form a team with classmates or sign up as individuals. All participants must provide their own equipment, including appropriate athletic shoes, clothing and any sport-specific gear. Students needing assistance with equipment should contact their school’s intramural coordinator.

State Law Requirements

Middle school families need to be aware of changes in state law which will now require the middle school intramural sports participants to have a preparticipation physical examination in order to participate.

What the Law Says
A new version of a Virginia law that becomes effective on July 1, 2025 requires students to submit a fully completed and properly signed Preparticipation Physical Evaluation form to the school principal or designee. The evaluation form must show that the student received a physical examination from a doctor, was found physically fit for athletic competition within 14 calendar months of the health care provider's dated signature, and that the student’s parents consent to the student’s participation.

What This Means for Families
As a result of this change in the law, all intramural participants for the 2025-26 school year will be required to submit documentation of a physical examination by a physician before participating.

Download and print the required LCPS Intramurals Preparticipation Physical Evaluation Form in English or Spanish. Schedule an exam and bring the form to your physician for evaluation and signature. Then, hand-deliver the completed paper copy to your school’s intramural coordinator. The forms can also be found on the LCPS Athletics and Activities webpage.

Why These Changes Matter

  • The law applies to all public middle schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Students will need to have a physical examination by a qualified healthcare provider and submit the signed form to their school principal or designee .
