  • Elementary Education Director Mike Martin retired at the end of July 2020 with more than 40 years of service to public education.

Dr. Martin was celebrated on his last day on the job with a drive-by parade organized by the elementary school principals. Principals decorated their cars with school magnets, balloons, posters and window paint. Costumed characters also put in an appearance. The parade took place after work hours at Kenneth Culbert Elementary. The principals lined up on both sides of the access road that runs between Harmony Middle School and Kenneth Culbert Elementary. They applauded Martin as he drove by in a convertible. Principals then returned to their cars to begin the parade to Culbert. Martin and several family members gathered in front of a large yard sign to wave and speak to the principals as they drove by. Martin delivered brief remarks in front of the school building to conclude the festivities. Superintendent Eric Williams and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Ashley Ellis also took part in the event.

Let’s revisit Dr. Martin’s tradition of riding his motorcycle to inspect each elementary school campus in the days before the start of school.
