School Board Honors Foreign Language Students

The 32 Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) students who attended the 2011 Governor’s Foreign Language Academies in Latin, German, French, Spanish and Japanese were honored by the Loudoun County School Board at its September 27th meeting.

Students must be nominated for these academies with a maximum of two nominations coming from any school. (Only one student may be nominated for the Japanese and Russian academies.) The Virginia Department of Education has sponsored these summer residential programs since 1986.

These are three-week summer residential programs. The French, Spanish and German academies are immersion programs where instruction is conducted solely in that language. The partial-immersion Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese academies are designed to provide an opportunity for interested students who have excelled in the study of another language for at least two years to be introduced to these cultures and languages, which are not widely taught in Virginia. The Latin Academy also will introduce students to classical Greek.
