LCPS Physical Education Teacher Honored by US Tennis Association

Victor Cortes, a Physical Education teacher at Sugarland Elementary School and lead coach of the Girls Rule the Court (GRTC) tennis program, received national recognition from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Mid-Atlantic Region Foundation as the 2023 “Tennis in the Classroom” winner. The award pays tribute to “those who exemplify the guiding principles of Community, Character, and Well-being” and recognizes his efforts to introduce thousands of student-athletes to the game.

In recognizing Cortes, USTA said Victor has paved the way for hundreds, if not thousands, of children to learn tennis with his initiative to incorporate tennis into his classes and curriculum. Victor has dedicated time to give his students a more in-depth experience with tennis and advocated for a Girls Rule the Court after-school tennis program to further develop their tennis skills and stay on a pathway with the sport in an accessible and convenient way.

Cortes was recognized for his achievements during the CITI Open tennis tournament in Washington, D.C., July 29 to August 6. In addition to his ceremony, players from Girls Rule the Court were able to meet and escort professional players during the tournament. This exciting opportunity for the student-athletes was made possible by a partnership with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

“Children can become eager and fit movers as well as active learners if we promote an active way of life,” Cortes said. “On the other hand, given the opportunity, children can become self-discovering and cooperative learners. By promoting these goals, teachers can use movement to enhance self-esteem and clarify values, among other things.”
