The Loudoun County School Board held a meeting at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, in the School Board Meeting Room at the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Administrative Offices, 21000 Education Court in Ashburn.

The School Board went into a Closed Session.
Recessed Meeting
Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by students Griffin V. and Charlie G. from Evergreen Mill Elementary School. The National Anthem was performed by the South Loudoun Youth Chorale.
Student and Staff Recognitions
The School Board recognized Exemplar Performance Award Recipients: Highest Achievement to Briar Woods High School, Emerick and Waterford Elementary Schools.
The School Board heard the One LCPS Spotlight: Summer 2023 Science Program Featuring Propel and Level Up for the success of the programs that took place in July 2023.
The School Board welcomed incoming Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence, who made remarks.

Acting Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Smith shared a number of updates, including:

Instructional staffing and vacancies for the 2023-2024 school year.

Community Listening Sessions for the community to meet the incoming superintendent.

LCPS funds available to assist teachers with classroom set-up and supply purchases.

Online ParentVue verification opens August 14 and remains open through September 22.

Public Comment
Community members participated in person and virtually to provide the School Board with comments on a range of topics.
Action Items
The Board addressed four Action Items:

The School Board approved the FY24 salary scales and recommended changes to the FY24 Operating Budget.

The School Board approved the FY24 Annual Audit Plan.

The School Board approved revisions of Policy 2430, School Board Agenda, as amended by the Legislative and Policy Committee.

The School Board adopted a proclamation recognizing September 2023 as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
Information Items
The Board discussed several information items, including:

Policy 8220 - Student Disciplinary Consequences, revised 9/13/22, which includes a section specific to students with disabilities.Deletion of Policy 5-55, a regulation specific to disciplinary procedures for students with disabilities will be finalized.

Policy 8025 - Rights of Adult Students (Former Policy 8-5) and deletion of Policy 8-5.

Policy 8435 - Missing Children. Policy 8435 was last updated in 2018 and is due for its standard cyclical policy review.
