Loudoun County Public Schools Celebrates 236 Teacher Cadets

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) celebrated 236 Teacher Cadets at a ceremony held at John Champe High School on May 25. The collaborative event between Shenandoah University and the LCPS Office of Career and Technical Education (CTE) recognized students who completed their Teacher Cadet Dual-Enrollment (DE) courses.

The Teacher Cadet program is a "grow our own" initiative offered to high school students in Grades 11 and 12 who are interested in pursuing a career in education. Participants get a first-hand look into teaching as a potential career. In addition to the coursework, Teacher Cadet students engage in real-world, project-based learning experiences, including an internship with LCPS teachers at the elementary and middle school levels.

Keynote speaker and LCPS Stone Bridge High School teacher Gabriella Boucher related to the students being honored;  a former Teacher Cadet, Boucher shared takeaways from her years of teaching. She challenged the students to hold onto their passion for the teaching profession. She stressed the importance of patience and creating strong, meaningful teacher-student relationships built on trust, respect, and open communication. "By actively listening and showing genuine interest in their students' lives and perspectives, teachers can establish a supportive rapport that encourages students to engage in their learning actively. These connections enhance academic achievement and contribute to students' social and emotional development, self-esteem, and overall well-being."

Teacher Cadet students who complete the program receive a Letter of Intent (LOI) from the LCPS Department of Human Resources and Talent Development (HRTD). The LOI is a declaration of preliminary commitment to return to LCPS after receiving a teaching credential for employment.

Current LCPS students interested in learning more about the Teacher Cadet initiative should contact their school counselor for details. An interest form will be available in the Student Opportunities portal (LCPS Go) in September 2023.
