School Board Summary May 23, 2023


The Loudoun County School Board held a meeting at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, in the School Board Meeting Room at the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Administrative Offices, 21000 Education Court in Ashburn.

School Board Work Session

The School Board discussed the revised, final version of the  Memo of Understanding (MOU) between The Loudoun County School Board, The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office and The Leesburg Police Department. 

Dr. Ellis and Ms. Dawson presented information to the School Board addressing a proposal regarding a Health and Medical Science (HAMSci) Academy.

The School Board discussed information from the Department of Support Services regarding naming recommendations for the newest LCPS Elementary School, ES-32.

Recessed Meeting

Pledge Leaders and National Anthem

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by LCPS’ 2023 VHSL State Champions. The National Anthem was performed by the Lightridge High School Orchestra.

Student and Staff Recognitions

Several students were recognized for their capturing of the VHSL State Championship in their sport and/or activity during the fall and winter sports season.

Rock Ridge High School was recognized as a 2022 Cognia School of Distinction.

Acting Superintendent’s Report

Dr. Smith shared a number of updates, including:

  • All seven policies identified by the Special Grand Jury for updating have been addressed and adopted.

  • Tedra Richardson, LCPS’s current Director of Special Education, has been appointed to the role of Assistant Superintendent for Student Services.

  • Graduation season at LCPS begins Wednesday, May 24. A link to the full schedule can be found on the LCPS website.

Public Hearing

The School Board held a public hearing for an abbreviated elementary school attendance zone change process for Tuscarora Crossing. No community members participated.

Community members participated in person to provide the School Board with comments on a range of topics.
