The Loudoun County School Board held a meeting at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, in the School Board Meeting Room at the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Administrative Offices, 21000 Education Court in Ashburn.

School Board Work Session
The School Board discussed the revised, final version of the Memo of Understanding (MOU) between The Loudoun County School Board, The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office and The Leesburg Police Department.
Dr. Ellis and Ms. Dawson presented information to the School Board addressing a proposal regarding a Health and Medical Science (HAMSci) Academy.
The School Board discussed information from the Department of Support Services regarding naming recommendations for the newest LCPS Elementary School, ES-32.
Recessed Meeting
Pledge Leaders and National Anthem
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by LCPS’ 2023 VHSL State Champions. The National Anthem was performed by the Lightridge High School Orchestra.
Student and Staff Recognitions
Several students were recognized for their capturing of the VHSL State Championship in their sport and/or activity during the fall and winter sports season.
Rock Ridge High School was recognized as a 2022 Cognia School of Distinction.

Acting Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Smith shared a number of updates, including:

All seven policies identified by the Special Grand Jury for updating have been addressed and adopted.

Tedra Richardson, LCPS’s current Director of Special Education, has been appointed to the role of Assistant Superintendent for Student Services.

Graduation season at LCPS begins Wednesday, May 24. A link to the full schedule can be found on the LCPS website.

Public Hearing
The School Board held a public hearing for an abbreviated elementary school attendance zone change process for Tuscarora Crossing. No community members participated.
Public Comment
Community members participated in person to provide the School Board with comments on a range of topics.
Action Items
The Board addressed five Action Items including:

The School Board approved the primary content resources as recommended by the CTE adoption committees.

The School Board approved and adopted Policy 8255, LCPS Guidelines for Protective Orders.

The School Board adopted the recommended attendance zone change to assign the Tuscarora Crossing development to John W. Tolbert Jr. Elementary School, which will take effect immediately.

The School Board adopted a proclamation recognizing June 2023 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month.
-
The School Board adopted a proclamation recognizing June 2, 2023, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
Information Items
The Board discussed several information items, including:

A request from the Finance and Operations Committee that the Loudoun County School Board approve a budget transfer request to support fuel expenditures in the Support Services Department budget.

A request that the Loudoun County School Board appropriate $160,000 in received proffer funds to the FY 2023 CIP Capital Facility Renewals and Alterations budget for a play area at Meadowland Elementary School.
-
A recommendation from the Finance and Operations Committee that the Loudoun County School Board approve the staff and committee recommended revisions to Policy 6320, Playgrounds.
