School Board Summary April 25, 2023


The Loudoun County School Board held a meeting at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25 2023.

School Board Work Session

The School Board received an update from Dr. Asia Jones on chronic absenteeism, particularly as it relates to a recent VDOE revision to Virginia’s School Accreditation Model for the 2023-2024 school year.

 

Dr. Ashley Cramp, Acting Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, presented to the School Board on Career and Technology Primary Content Resource Recommendations. A public announcement regarding the final stages of the adoption process will be sent to all LCPS families and staff.

Pledge Leaders and National Anthem

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the Stone Hill Middle School Robotics Team. The National Anthem was performed by the Willard Middle School Select Choir.

 

Student and Staff Recognition

Lori Mercer, Principal of Hovatter Elementary School, was selected as Loudoun County's Principal of the Year and the LCPS nominee for The Washington Post Principal of the Year Award.

 

Steve Hicks, Social Science and Global Studies Teacher at Dominion High School, was selected as Loudoun County's Teacher of the Year and the LCPS nominee for The Washington Post Teacher of the Year Award.

 

Parie Ahmady, a fifth-grade teacher at Sterling Elementary School, was selected as the 2022-2023 Elementary New Teacher of the Year. Sarah Proper, an English teacher at River Bend Middle School, was selected as the 2022-2023 Secondary New Teacher of the Year.

Public Comment

Community members participated in person and virtually to provide the School Board with comments on a range of topics including special education and speech and language pathologists, restroom privacy and construction, and virtual distance learning. 

 

Acting Superintendent’s Report

Dr. Smith shared a number of updates, including:

  • Addressing misinformation surrounding LCPS’ pilot program for restrooms.

  • VDOE approving new history & social science standards.

  • Addressing the FY24 budget and staffing standards regarding special education.

Action Items

The Board addressed five Action Items from the agenda, including:

  • The School Board unanimously adopted the current FY23 salary scales for FY24.

  • The School Board placed Middleburg Community Charter School on probation.

  • The School Board approved the 2023-2024 Annual Plan for Special Education and Application for Federal Funds.

Information Items

The Board discussed several information items, including:

  • A recommendation from staff for the Loudoun County School Board to appropriate $559,770 in additional funds from the Commonwealth of Virginia to the Loudoun County Public Schools School Nutrition Services Fund.

  • A recommendation from staff that the School Board approve and accept revised Policy 8640, Disclosure of Student Personally Identifiable Information and Other Educational Records.

  • Information that Policy 3070 revisions in response to the Report of the Special Grand Jury on the Investigation of Loudoun County Public Schools, CL-22-3129, dated December 2, 2022, will move to an action item at the next meeting.
