School Board Selects Dr. Scott Ziegler as Interim Superintendent

December 15, 2020

To: All LCPS Families and Staff Members:

The Loudoun County School Board is pleased to announce the unanimous selection of Dr. Scott A. Ziegler as the Interim Superintendent for Loudoun County Public Schools, effective January 1, 2021. “Dr. Ziegler has demonstrated exceptional leadership and management acumen since joining LCPS, and his extensive prior experience as an educator, a school-based administrator, and a division-level administrator, provide a strong foundation for leadership,” said School Board Chair Brenda Sheridan.

Dr. Ziegler began his career as a special education teacher in 1992, with the James Barry Robinson Center (a Portsmouth, Va., non-profit behavioral health system), Portsmouth Public Schools and Virginia Beach City Public Schools. He also taught social studies in Virginia Beach City Public Schools.  After more than 15 years as a classroom teacher, he became an assistant principal and then an employee relations specialist with that division. Immediately prior to joining LCPS, Dr. Ziegler served as Executive Director of Human Resources & Special Projects for the Portsmouth Public Schools, a position he held from 2015 to 2019. Dr. Ziegler is currently the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Talent Development at LCPS, a position he has held since December 2019.

Dr. Ziegler holds a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Education Leadership from Cambridge College, Cambridge, Mass. He earned a master’s degree in secondary education and a bachelor’s degree in history from Eastern Nazarene College, Quincy, Mass. He is married and lives in western Loudoun County.

“The School Board is very pleased to have identified a candidate to fill this important role who has firsthand knowledge of Loudoun County Public Schools’ current needs and opportunities, and who can provide continuity of leadership during this important time,” Chair Sheridan added.

Dr. Ziegler said, “The role of public schools has never been more important than it is today, and I am honored to be selected to fulfill this interim role for LCPS as we continue to adapt to the fast-changing world around us. Working with the exceptional professionals who comprise the LCPS staff -- including administrative personnel, transportation staff members, other support services personnel, teachers, teacher assistants, other instructional team members and school administrators -- and the LCPS leadership team, I am confident we can continue to address our current challenges and provide meaningful educational experiences to Loudoun County students.”

Dr. Ziegler will serve as Interim Superintendent while the School Board conducts a nationwide search for a permanent superintendent pursuant to the resignation of Dr. Eric Williams. Dr. Williams’ last day as LCPS Superintendent will be January 6, 2021.

LCPS plans to conduct a nationwide search for a Superintendent, using an education executive search firm and stakeholder committees. The School Board will continue to share information regarding further developments as it progresses.

We appreciate the community’s support as we work through this process.
