LCPS Updates Strategic Plan to Include New Objectives

The implementation period for the Loudoun County Public Schools “Vision 20/20” strategic plan will end next year, so the Loudoun County School Board and division staff have begun working to develop new strategic actions to continue progress toward its goals.

On Tuesday, October 15, the school board will hold a work session from 4 to 10 p.m. to receive presentations by staff and discuss proposed strategic actions. The actions that will be presented at the Oct. 15 work session are listed below:

  • Gifted Education
  • Competitive Compensation
  • Deeper Learning (Project Based Learning, Personalized Learning, and Performance Assessment)
  • Equity as a Core Belief

More information about the strategic actions will be posted in the Meetings section of the school board’s webpage before the meeting.

The community is welcome to attend the session, although participation is limited to school board members and staff. Public input will be received during regular board meetings when each strategic action is considered for acceptance into the plan by the board. Feedback can also be sent to the board at  lcsb@lcps.org or through the division at schools@lcps.org.

No decisions about the strategic actions will be made at this work session. Instead strategic actions will be presented at future board meetings, first as information items and then as action items for approval.

The goals in the Vision 20/20 plan are:

Goal 1: Develop knowledgeable critical thinkers, communicators, collaborators, creators, and contributors

Goal 2: Cultivate a high-performing team of professionals focused on our mission and goals.

Goal 3: Deliver effective and efficient support for student success.

There are 17 strategic actions in the current plan that were developed to direct the division’s progress toward those goals.

The strategic actions include measurable performance parameters and desired outcomes expressed as year-to-year objectives from 2015 through 2020. The goals, strategic actions and progress reports for each are available online, and are regularly updated as the administration reports progress to the school board and the community.

Development of the current strategic plan began in 2014. The Loudoun County School Board approved a resolution in October that year calling for the development of a division strategic plan that would reflect “a shared mission, strong core beliefs, and rigorous goals in order to have a high performing, effective and efficient school division.”

The plan was developed over many months with extensive community input and effort by the Loudoun County Public Schools’ staff. The objective was to create a framework for building a high-performing school division that would empower all students to make meaningful contributions to the world.

With 2020 approaching, LCPS initiated the process of establishing new strategic actions and new measurable desired outcomes earlier this year. An initial list of new strategic actions was approved by the school board in June, and LCPS staff began developing new actions with proposed metrics and desired outcomes.
