Cardinal Ridge’s 5th Anniversary

Cardinal Ridge Elementary celebrated its fifth anniversary with a schoolwide project-based learning (PBL) activity.

The PTO supported the activity in two ways. First, the PTO donated new landscaping for the school’s courtyard.  Secondly, it provided a copy of Linda Kranz’s book “Only One You” for each classroom.

The book features several positive messages and offers advice on navigating the world:

  • Blend in when you need to. Stand out when you have the chance.
  • Always be on the lookout for a new friend.
  • Appreciate art. It’s all around you.
  • Know when to speak; know when to listen.

The specialists at Cardinal Ridge in art, music, library, physical education and guidance have incorporated the themes of the book into their lessons since the start of school.  For example, fifth-grade music students wrote their own song called “Only One You” to the tune of Imagine Dragons’ “Thunder.”

In art class, every student and staff member painted a “rock fish” just like those in the book’s illustrations.  Each rock is unique, just like the person who painted it.

On Monday, December 10th, students and staff braved chilly temperatures for the unit’s culminating activity.  Students in each grade level visited the new courtyard with their rock fish, which they “released” into the landscaped rock bed.  Each student has left a small piece of themselves on the campus for future students to appreciate.
