LCPS Guitar Festival Friday

“Women of the Guitar” is the theme for the 2018 Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Guitar Festival and Assessment. The opening concert will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, March 2nd, at Riverside High School and is free to the public.

The concert will feature Kami Rowan, Helen Sanderson and Latin Grammy Nominees the Beijing Guitar Duo of Meng Su and Yameng Wang. The concert is free and open to the public.

Rowan teaches at Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., where she is associate professor of music and chair of the music department. Sanderson of the United Kingdom is senior professor of guitar at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the musical director of the National Youth Guitar Ensemble and was recently made a Winston Churchill Fellow for her work in guitar education.

Composed of guitarists Meng Su and Yameng Wang, the Beijing Guitar Duo has performed throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. The members of the duo share a love for teaching that brings them to major conservatories in the world for master classes and to judge competitions.

LCPS guitar students will be coached and be adjudicated by these artists on Saturday, March 3rd, as part of the festival. Students also will attend clinics during the day. Clinics will feature SFC. Chad Leader from the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own” for a jazz workshop, Dr. Candice Mowbray for a discussion of the history of women in guitar and two local guitar makers, Tim Steis and Richard Waltz, for a discussion of their craft.
