It is hard to believe we are sending the final update of the first quarter. Today marks the end of the first nine weeks and Monday and Tuesday will be used as teacher workdays so we can finish report cards and prepare for an even better second quarter.
A huge THANK YOU to all of the parents and volunteers that made today’s fall parties fun for all. It was a great way to end the week!
To say third grade has been busy is an understatement. But, we couldn’t be more proud of how our Veteran’s Day PBL is all coming together. This week third graders led their house meetings and each house made poppies to be handed out at our Veteran’s Day Assembly on November 11th. Other staff and teachers had nothing but positive things to say about our third graders as leaders, and were very proud of what the school came together to create.
The memorials have been created and are in their final stages. If you haven’t already, ask your child what they created and why?! All memorials will be on display during our program on November 11th. This week groups wrote a paragraph explaining the significance behind their memorial and how they chose that particular representation.
As the weather turns cooler, please make sure to send sweatshirts and jackets as we will be going outside for recess most days. Our area tends to be on the windier side, so feel free to send additional items to stay warm. We also recommend labeling the inside tag on jackets so when items are left outside they can be returned to their rightful owner.
Math- This week has been full of subtraction fun! Students have been challenged to extend their skills, while other students have received more basic instruction working on support strategies for fact recall and reviewing the steps to accurately subtract. Can your child create a word problem to support a subtraction fact like 523 - 198? Can they then accurately solve the problem? We always appreciate real world support and practice at home.
DreamBox- This week all third graders had their DreamBox accounts updated and they began working on assignments tailored to their specific skill needs and level. Does your child ask for screen time in the evenings? Looking for ways for them to use devices for educational purposes? DreamBox or Xtramath are both great programs kids love and can use to extend and enrich their learning.
Reading and Writing Workshop- Our reading and writing has been integrated in all of our PBL work this week. Students have created invitations, written paragraphs about their memorials, and are in the midst of writing letters to veterans. We love writing for a purpose in the real world.
Students continue to develop their insight into the characters in their books. Have you asked about Opal lately? She has made some new friends that are going through some tough situations. She is learning that you can’t judge people at face value and people have life events that have shaped them. Ask your child to share some of her struggles. Can they relate? What can they connect to in the real world?
Science- DISSOLVE! Dissolve has been the word of the week. I hope your child has told you all they have discovered around this powerful word. Each student was part of a team that designed an experiment to investigate the impact the temperature of the water has on the time that it takes lemonade to dissolve. They planned and executed the experiment independently with their teams. Many students were surprised to learn that liquids also dissolved in other liquids. But, some do not. Ask them to share this discovery with you!
Word Study- All students were assessed today and new words will come home on Wednesday. Thank you for your support in reviewing words at home.
