We hope to see many of you at the Bear Crawl event this evening. We would like to thank our amazing PTO crew who has been working around the clock to make this event a success. Please read below for important field trip information!
Math- This week students have extended their place value knowledge to rounding. When would we need to round in real life? What rules do we know that help us? How can a number line help us? Some students need a lot of extra support in rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. This is a skill we will continue to refine, even as we move on to computation next week.
Reading and Writing Workshop- We are excited to announce that we have finished our first reading unit of the year. Students have been hard at work “Building A Reading Life” as they have learned and reviewed important strategies We are excited to begin our next unit on characters next week. Students are really doing some deep thinking working as they look for character changes and find evidence to support their thinking. The past few days we have spent some extra time learning about veterans and following up on our Stone Fox book.
In writing all students have chosen their “piece” and are finishing their drafts. They will then examine these drafts and with the support of mini lessons, improve their lead, find the heart of the story, and work on a strong ending. After editing and revising they will have a final piece to share. Ask your child to share their story idea with you!
Word Study- Everyone was assessed today. Look for new words on Monday. Thank you for your support in practicing at home.
Veteran’s Day PBL- Tuesday we kicked off our first quarter PBL in preparation for Veteran’s Day. (see our pictures on Twitter) Students began by making connections of pictures and important holidays. This led them to Veteran’s Day and they were very knowledgeable about the day along with the meaning and understanding all that veterans have done and continue to do for our country and our freedom. This week they are digging deeper and learning about veterans as they answer the question- How can we, as third graders, come up with a way to honor veterans? We look forward to our guest speakers next Tuesday as well as a visit from Boulder Crest the following week. Check Twitter to see how our project progresses and mark your calendars for our music program on Veteran’s Day as well!
Coding/iLab- Students are still debugging and problem solving their pole position games. They will extend their knowledge and skills from their first game to create another project retelling Stone Fox. They look forward to sharing these projects (along with another special one) for the Epic Build. This week in iLab each class spent more time in Tinkercad. Students are learning how to combine shapes and create their own 3D models. Have your child log on and show you what they have learned!
Field Trip- We are excited for our first field trip this year. Students will get messy while investigating types of soil and working to create the perfect blend. This is an excellent extension of our soil unit. The link for the permission slip is pasted above. If you have trouble or prefer a paper copy, please ask. Each class will need 3 chaperones for the field trip. Chaperones need to be prepared to be plugged in and supporting soil discovery. If you are interested, please let your child’s teacher know by Tuesday evening. Names will be chosen on Wednesday and teachers will notify those that were picked. We appreciate your interest and involvement!
