Guidance for Staying Healthy

Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,

We continue to have some cases of COVID-19 in our community. In addition, during the winter months, we see an increase in the number of the following illnesses:

  • Streptococcal infections, which cause strep throat
  • Respiratory infections, such as influenza (flu) and common colds
  • Gastrointestinal illnesses can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea

To help prevent the spread of these types of illnesses, we encourage you and your family to:

  • Practice and encourage good hand hygiene: Washing one’s hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizer regularly is very effective in preventing the spread of viruses and bacteria.
  • Encourage respiratory etiquette. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, your sleeve or elbow during coughing and sneezing.
  • Encourage your children to avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Keep your child home if they are ill and stay home if you are ill.
  • Eat a healthy diet and get plenty of rest.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Get a flu shot and stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations. Talk to your healthcare provider about getting you and your child vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19.

Please see information from the Virginia Department of Health about COVID-19 and flu. In addition, please see guidance from LCPS on when to keep your student home from school. Keep in mind that this guidance does not replace medical or healthcare guidance.

Thank you for helping to keep our students healthy and in school! Please contact your school health office if you have questions.
