Parents and Staff,

We are happy to share our 6th grade winner of the HPE Health and Safety project. The student goals were to design a public safety message / reminder to help during our Covid crisis. The winning design was selected from over 350 6th graders.

This project design was created by Scarlett Burns from Mr. Josh Young's class.

A local company (https://thefalconlab.com/) produced her work for use in our hallways. Check out the pictures attached.

Great job, SCARLETT:)

Parents,

Harmony MS and Woodgrove HS are working together to keep the same (hybrid) alphabetic split that we shared information about in our Town Hall meetings.

Together we decided that those who selected hybrid were split into two groups; one on Tuesday and Wednesday and the second group on Thursday and Friday.

We are both splitting the days based on last names:

If your child’s last name starts with A to K, you will attend hybrid, at school, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

If your child’s last name starts with L to Z you will attend hybrid, at school, on Thursdays and Fridays.

Thanks for your patience.

Stay safe - Eric Stewart

Parents,

We have several items to share in this mid-week update:

Communication – Please continue to reach out to us for help with anything but especially items of safety, climate, or instruction. We want to be kept in the loop and want to hear from you to see how we can help. Likewise, we will be communicating with you and although we try to reduce our emails and newsletters as much as possible, we feel that more communication is better than less communication.

Equity - About every other week, we put the Superintendent's Equity Statement in our newsletter. We do this to remind everyone of the LCPS School Board and school expectations for equity. As he says in his statement, LCPS rejects racism and other hateful behavior and language, recognizing that it encourages discrimination, hatred, oppression, and violence." If your child is experiencing any form of racial insults, slurs, or hate speech, please contact the deans (contact info below) immediately so we can investigate it and get it stopped.

Superintendent's Equity Statement - https://www.lcps.org/Page/219268

Grading Period Ends Soon:

October 30 is the end of the first quarter marking period. Please check your child's grades. Part of having ParentVUE and Schoology is to allow parents quick access to material, assignments, and grades. Although there is a "syncing lag time" of several days between the two systems, parents should be checking on their child's grades and assignments in ParentVUE to stay ahead of any issues. If you need help getting in or finding these resources, please contact us immediately so you can get better access.

Calendar Dates this Week:

10/20 - Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night (5 PM to 8 PM)

10/21 – Wear School Colors Day (Maroon and Gray)

10/22 – Twin Day (dress like twins)

10/23 – Jersey Day (support favorite sports team)

11/2 - Make Up Pictures (9 to 12 - see details below)

LAST CHANCE FOR PICTURES! On November 2nd from 9-12, Harmony will hold a make-up picture day for any students who were unable to have their pictures taken in September and October.

Please see the Lifetouch order form for information about ordering. Call your House secretary if you have any questions.

We plan to take school pictures in a safe and socially distant manner.

1. Students will enter and check in through the 1st main gym door. (see map)

2. Students must wear face coverings at all times (except during photograph) and stand at designated cones when waiting in line. Photographers will clean areas between each picture.

3. Students will be photographed in the main gym and then exit the back gym door (#2) and walk to meet parents, who should be parked on the blacktop. (see map)

Parents should enter the parking lot and proceed straight ahead, turning right after the parking area. Drop students off at door 1 and follow the sidewalk around to the blacktop. Please park on the blacktop and wait for your child to exit the building (door 2 on the map). After your child has returned to your car, please exit by following the sidewalk around the building (as shown on map).

Hello,

LCPS has acquired a limited number of hotpots to be delivered to families to assist during the extended closure due to COVID. If you would like to request a mobile internet hotspot, please fill out this FORM. You must be an LCPS student to be eligible to request a device. Quantities are limited. Therefore we plan to evaluate the need with multiple data points to ensure that devices are not distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, but rather to the students with the greatest needs first. Submitting a request does not guarantee that a hotspot will be provided.

The LCPS hotspots operate across several providers. However, cellular coverage is required by one of our carriers for the device to operate.

The school staff will review and approve all requests. If approved, staff will contact you to inform you how to coordinate the pickup of the device at one of the Hardware Repair Centers starting 9/1/20.

If you do not have cellular coverage in your area, please contact us to discuss alternative options to assist your student(s).

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Erin Pinero, 7th grade Dean (Erin.Pinero@lcps.org), Betty Webber, Parent Liaison (Elizabeth.BlesWebber@lcps.org) or Sarah Miller, School Social Worker (Sarah.Miller@lcps.org)

Thanks

Hello Harmony Community,

The staff at Harmony has been working steadily over the summer, and in recent weeks, to prepare for the start to our 2020-2021 school year. While the start to the year will be different than we have been accustomed to in years past we are strongly committed to making your child’s upcoming year the best one possible.

To that end, there are a few items from the school that will be necessary for your student to participate and maximize all instructional activities and opportunities. Specifically, these items include musical instruments, consumable materials for some math classes, yearbooks from this past school year, and a few other miscellaneous items arranged by individual departments. To distribute these items in the safest way for both community and staff, we will be holding a curbside pick-up similar to those held at the end of the school year in June.

Who should come for the pickup?

• Math students enrolled in Math 6, Foundations of Algebra, or Pre-Algebra • Students enrolled in a Semester 1 or Full Year Art class

• All 6th Grade English / Language Arts Students

• Students who are picking up instruments (primarily new students but some returning students as well - the band or strings teacher will have emailed you specifically)

• Students who have yearbooks that were not picked up in the spring (We also have 28 available for sale at $35)

• Students who need to return library books from last year

• Any student who has arranged a pickup with a staff member for other items

When should you come to pick up your child’s things?

The date for this pick-up will be Friday August 28th from 9am to 12pm.

Please plan to arrive during the time listed below:

• Student last names A-G: 9:00-10:00

• Student last names H-O: 10:00-11:00

• Student last names P-Z: 11:00-12:00

What to do when you arrive?

1. Prior to arrival, prepare a sign with large, legible font that includes your child’s name and grade level. Display this sign in the driver's side window of your vehicle to limit the number of times you have to open your window.

2. Follow the yellow traffic flow arrows on the attached map. You will follow these to each station.

3. Be alert for directions from staff who will be outside to assist you as you move through the pick-up.

As always, we appreciate your support in making these events as efficient as possible. If you will be picking up items for friends or neighbors, or if you have questions, please reach out to your grade level dean so they can assist you.

If you have questions about this pick-up, please contact Eric McGrady (eric.mcgrady@lcps.org).

If you need assistance accessing necessary materials, please contact the Harmony parent liaison, Ms. Betty Webber (elizabeth.bleswebber@lcps.org)

Dear Harmony Parents,

Hello and welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. I hope your summer has been productive and that you are all doing well. The staff and I are getting ready to begin final preparations for the fall and thought we should reach out and provide you with a few updates. As usual, I hope you will contact me (eric.stewart@lcps.org) with any questions or concerns.

Thanks ahead of time for your patience, communication, and partnership.

Instruction Updates (starting in the 100% distance learning model on September 8):

• Students will interact synchronously (live, interactive online) with their teachers Tuesday through Friday and will also have designated independent work times for asynchronous learning (independent, without live interaction).

• Face-to-face interaction with each teacher is approximately 82 minutes per week in both the 100% distance learning model (via synchronous instruction from home) and when students transition to the hybrid model (via in-person instruction during the school day).

• A middle and high school student’s week will include instruction in all courses and a resource block or study hall. Some middle and high school electives may be limited due to scheduling in both models. LCPS will attempt to accommodate electives and match students with their home school whenever possible. Schools may provide virtual extracurricular activities during 100% distance learning, and in-person extracurricular activities may take place when hybrid learning begins.

• School Supplies – We had a previous (and traditional) School Supply list prepared in June but we are modifying it for the 100% model and will send the final list out in a separate communication with you this week.

• Return to School Plan – The School Board and superintendent Williams are working together on a “Stage by Stage Return to School” plan to get kids back into the classroom. Additional details will be coming in the future.

• Attendance in 100% distance learning at the start of the 2020-2021 school year is compulsory, and participation in synchronous and asynchronous activities is required.

• Attendance will be taken during synchronous learning sessions with the teacher and participation will be monitored through Schoology, the new LCPS learning management system.
• Student schedules and teacher assignments will not be ready for several weeks.

Safety Updates:

• Harmony MS will follow all guidelines and expectations given by LCPS.

• Once final details are made about social distancing, masks, etc. (all in accordance with the requirements and recommendations of state and public health officials), we will send them to you.

Climate Updates:

All students will be provided with opportunities to support social and emotional learning and mental health and wellness in both 100% distance learning and as students transition to the hybrid model of in-person and distance learning. This will also be supported through our Advisory period which is an expected part of each student’s day.

• The PTA Board is meeting this week to discuss their goals and ways they will be helping the school. Thank you Board members: Ms. Donovan, Ms. Fain, Ms. Metzler, and Ms. Murray.

• State of Mind – This is a challenging time in our history. I am asking for your help in maintaining communication with the school and teachers so together we can support our students. Let’s keep leaning in a positive direction in our thoughts and actions. We will get through this opening (and year). We will need each other to do it and the kids will need us most. We’ll help each other. We’ll help them.

General School Updates:

• LCPS staff are currently removing the Promethean Boards at Harmony and getting ready for the new Interactive Promethean Board installation in each room.

• Sometime this year, a “Traffic Light” is expected to be installed in front of our school at the main entrance.

• Our custodians have cleaned, waxed, and sanitized all rooms. They have currently only returned 8-10 desks and chairs to each room so when the Hybrid students return (TBD), there will be preset distances for each desk.

• The rest of the furniture from each room is located in each House locker hallway (since kids will not be using their lockers this Fall).

• By the end of August, our school parking lot will have been repaved and repainted. The outdoor track and basketball courts will be repaved as well.

This was just a brief update on the school status. We will be providing more information weekly as we get ready for September 8. In the meantime, please contact me at any time – eric.stewart@lcps.org.

THANKS

Eric Stewart, Principal

A summer update from Harmony’s IT Department:

Do you have a student’s Chromebook in need of repair? Why wait until fall? The on-site repair center in Ashburn will continue to run through the summer, albeit, with limited appointments. Even if the Chromebook is working, it may be in need of repairs: screen is popping out from frame, keys are missing from keyboard, touchpad/touch screen may not work, no cursor.

When you make an appointment, your student will receive a replacement Chromebook which they will keep into next year (you will NOT have to pick up the repaired Chromebook). LCPS will be closely monitoring the district’s operating status, and, depending on the status, they may cease or expand on-site operations to meet the needs of the district.

Don’t delay. To schedule your appointment, visit https://tinyurl.com/HRM-ChromebookRepairInfo.
