Loudoun County Public Schools Celebrates School Nutrition Professionals on School Lunch Hero Day
Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) honors school nutrition professionals for their hard work and commitment to providing healthy meals to students on School Lunch Hero Day, Fri., May 5. Between preparing delicious food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, offering service with a smile, and rolling out a new Point of Sale software this school year, LCPS nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate daily.
Across Loudoun County, school nutrition professionals will be recognized by students, school staff, parents and the community. School Nutrition Services (SNS) professionals are proud to serve the young scholars of LCPS with nutritious breakfast and lunch meals each day, to support their academic success.
“School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state, and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity for the community to thank these hard-working heroes for their dedication to fueling our students for success,” said Elizabeth B. Mills, SNS Director.
For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day. Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, a variety of fruits/vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats. Local fresh fruits and vegetables are also available to students throughout the school year, such as pink-lady apples, kohlrabi, kale, butternut squash, radishes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, and asparagus – to name a few!
