LCPS Students Demonstrate High Achievement on the 2022 SOL Tests


ASHBURN, Va.
– August 18, 2022 – Reports released by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) today show high achievement by Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) students as measured by the 2022 Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. The results indicate that SOL proficiency rates are returning to pre-pandemic achievement levels. Efforts by educators, students, and families during the transition from distance to in-person learning helped LCPS schools to meet or exceed  the overall state pass rate for 26 of the 31 SOL tests administered. 

Pass Rates for All Students

LCPS pass rates for all SOL content areas increased or remained the same from Spring 2021 to Spring 2022:

  • English: Reading: 80 percent of LCPS students earned a passing score on an English: Reading SOL test, an increase of one point from 2021.

  • English Writing: 81 percent of students passed an English: Writing SOL test, the same rate as 2021.

  • History/Social Science: 81 percent of students passed a History or Social Science SOL test, an increase of 10 points from 2021.

  • Math: 74 percent of students passed a Mathematics SOL test, an increase of 10 points from 2021.

  • Science: 75 percent of students passed a Science SOL test, an increase of 3 points from 2021.

Thirty-four schools increased their pass rates on the English:Reading SOL test by at least five percentage points and 50 schools increased their pass rates in the Mathematics SOL test by at least 10 percentage points.Thirty-four schools increased their pass rates on the Science SOL test by at least 10 points.

More than 96 percent LCPS of students enrolled in an SOL-related course completed a state assessment in 2022, a significant increase from the previous year, when VDOE opt-out waivers resulted in participation rates varying from 67 percent for English Reading to 73 percent for Science. Participation rates are now closer to pre-pandemic years when at least 99 percent of students were tested in every content area.

 

Achievement by Student Group

With the support of specialized instructional assistance, English Learners and students with disabilities scored higher than similar students across the state as indicated by SOL proficiency rates.

“I am extremely encouraged by these results,” said LCPS Superintendent Dr. Scott Ziegler. “Not only did our SOL scores improve or remain stable, they did so while seeing a significant increase in the number of students participating in SOL testing. I am also heartened that students with disabilities and English learners scored above the state average on these assessments.

 

“While it’s too soon to say that the learning loss brought about by the pandemic has been overcome, or that academic life has returned completely to normal, I think these scores reflect the outstanding effort and commitment to excellence our teachers and staff have made on behalf of LCPS students. Knowing that we can never be complacent about academic achievement, we will analyze the data and make adjustments as necessary,  and I think these test scores show that Loudoun County Public Schools is heading in the right direction. With the emphasis on academic rigor and expansion of opportunity for all students contained in One LCPS 2027 Strategic Plan for Excellence, I am excited for the future.”
