Science Fair Seeks Review Committee Members

The Loudoun County Regional Science & Engineering Fair (RSEF) is looking for volunteers to serve as members of the Science Review Committee (SRC) and Institutional Review Board (IRB). The RSEF will be held March 22-23, 2023 at Rock Ridge High School. This will mark the first time since 2019 that the Science Fair will be in-person.

Members of the SRC/IRB are asked to review student science project proposals for their compliance with the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) rules. Primarily, SRC/IRB reviewers are looking for issues of safety and confidentiality. Committee members also comment regarding the content and procedures of the research project.

The ISEF rules require that certain projects, those that involve human participants, vertebrate animals and potentially hazardous biological agents, have SRC/IRB approval before experimentation begins. Review board members should have an earned doctoral degree in biomedical science, medicine (MD), veterinary medicine (DVM), dental surgery (DDS), pharmacy (PharmD), or osteopathic medicine (DO)

The SRC/IRB is currently in need of additional members who can review Vertebrate Animal Studies and Human Participant Studies. RSEF student research that involves vertebrate animals and human studies is guided by a comprehensive set of rules (see the ISEF Rules beginning on page 6).

ISEF categories for the 2023 RSEF are:

Animal Sciences

Engineering Technology: Statistics & Dynamics

Behavioral & Social Sciences

Environmental Engineering

Materials Science

Biomedical & Health Sciences

Those interested in serving on the Loudoun RSEF SRC/IRB should contact LCPS Science Supervisor Odette D. Scovel by e-mail at or by phone at 571-252-1360.

The ISEF website has many additional resources that prospective SRC/IRB members might find useful. The rules for pre-college science research are also posted on the website and are helpful for prospective committee members to review.
