Freedom Named Co-Teaching Demonstration Site

Sara Turner and Michael Albert of Freedom High School have been selected as an Excellence in Co-Teaching Demonstration Site by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

The program identifies outstanding co-teaching teams made up of one content area teacher and one special educator who combine their skills and talents to deliver effective instruction to students with special needs. In this case, Ms. Turner is a math teacher, and Mr. Albert is a special education teacher.

As a demonstration site, Turner and Albert will:

  • Open their classroom in-person or virtually to visiting teachers and administrators
  • Model best practices in co-planning, co-instructing and co-assessing
  • Conduct professional development in the division or school
  • Mentor other co-teaching teams and
  • Create products to be shared online with other educators.

Turner and Albert will attend the 2022 Real Co-Teachers of Virginia Academy July 15 in Richmond and complete a series of asynchronous modules prior to the academy. Participants in the program receive a personal stipend, and their schools receive a grant to purchase materials and supplies to support students with disabilities.

The co-teaching demonstration site at Freedom High School joins several others already established in LCPS, including two at Discovery Elementary, one at Harmony Middle and one at Eagle Ridge Middle.
