U.S. News Ranks LCPS High Schools Among Best in Nation

 

U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 Best High Schools rankings were published recently. The 15 Loudoun County Public Schools high schools eligible for this honor earned high national and metro-area rankings. (Independence and Lightridge High schools are too new to be evaluated using the ranking criteria.)

  

Graduation rates and college readiness are key metrics for these rankings. U.S. News ranked about 18,000 out of nearly 24,000 reviewed public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Schools ranked in the top 40 percent nationally (number 7,137 or better) achieved status as U.S. News Best High Schools.

 

Following are the rankings of LCPS schools within the school division, the Metropolitan Washington Area, Virginia and the nation:

U.S. News assessed schools on the following six factors:

  • College readiness, based on the proportion of 12th grade students who took and earned a qualifying score on at least one Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam (30 percent of ranking).
  • State assessment proficiency, based on aggregated scores on state assessments that students may be required to pass for graduation (20 percent).
  • State assessment performance, based on whether performance on state assessments exceeded expectations given the school's proportion of underserved students (20 percent).
  • Underserved student performance, based on how Black, Hispanic and low-income students performed on state assessments compared with those who are not underserved in the state (10 percent).
  • College curriculum breadth, based on proportions of 12th grade students who took and earned a qualifying score on AP and/or IB exams in multiple content areas (10 percent).
  • Graduation rate, based on the proportion of students who entered ninth grade in 2016-2017 and graduated four years later (10 percent).

 

The Best High Schools rankings are produced in conjunction with RTI International, a global research firm. U.S. News doesn’t collect data directly from high schools – all data comes directly from official third-party sources.
