Unified Basketball Teams Take the Court at Riverside

The student cheering section at Riverside High School never sounded louder than they did on Wednesday, Dec. 8, when they welcomed the members of the Riverside and Freedom Unified Basketball Teams to the court to play at halftime of the boys’ varsity game.

Unified sports are inclusive programs that seek to bring together students with and without  intellectual disabilities. Both teams wore regulation uniforms previously used by varsity teams at their respective schools, and the full lineup of each team was introduced by the announcer. Parents brought signs in support of their players, and every player scored a basket. One player even attempted a dunk.

The Unified Basketball Coach at Riverside is Kevin Weeren. The Unified Basketball Coaches at Freedom are Eric Cusick and Donna Shockley.
