LCPS Resetting Student Passwords August 10th

On Saturday, August 10th, Loudoun County Public Schools will be resetting all student passwords back to a default.

This process helps with a smooth start to the school year by ensuring that all students start the year with a known password. This year, to fully align with LCPS regulations, and to teach appropriate digital citizenship and safety skills, the format of the default password will be different than in previous years. LCPS will require a strong password for students in grades 2 through 12.

The format is identified below.

When will the reset happen?

On Saturday, August 10th, Loudoun County Public Schools will reset all student passwords to ensure students have access to view their schedule and bus route in StudentVue prior to the start of school. If a student does not change their password, their account will be set to force a password change on the next login, starting after 6 a.m. on Friday, September 6th.

What will be the new password format?

The passwords will be reset to the following formats:

  • Students in grades K-1: four-digit birthday, with the first two digits representing the month, and the last two digits representing the day (MMDD)
  • Students in grades 2-12: LCPS-MMDDYY where the last six-digits are the birthday with the first two digits representing the month, the next two digits representing the day, and the last two digits representing the year (MMDDYY)

What do families need to know?

For students in grades K-1, no action is needed. Students may continue to use their default password to access LCPS accounts.

Students in grades 2-12 – after passwords are reset on August 10th – should log in to LCPSGO (go.lcps.org) and change their password to a strong password prior to the start of school on Thursday, August 22nd.

To change their passwords, students can:

  1. Login to LCPSGO (go.lcps.org);
  2. Navigate to the My Profile screen using the down arrow at the top right of the page;
  3. Click the Reset Password button towards the bottom of the General page;
  4. Enter their default password (LCPS-MMDDYY) in the old password field;
  5. Enter a strong new password twice in the new and confirm fields;
  6. Click Submit.

What is a strong password?

All School Division employees, contractors, vendors, agents, and students (exclusive of grades PK-1 and special exceptions) are required to use strong passwords.  Strong passwords have the following characteristics:

  1. Contain both upper- and lower-case alphabetical characters.
  2. Have digits, punctuation, and special characters (e.g., 0-9, !@#$%^&*()-+{}[]?.<>,/).
  3. Contain at least eight characters including alpha, numeric, and special characters.

Passwords should never be shared or stored in an unsecure manner and families should consider using a passphrase similar to LCPSR0ck$1 to create a secure password.
