    Assessment & Grading Expectations
    Douglass School Elementary School follows the Loudoun County Public Schools Expectations Regarding Assessment and Grading.

    Grading and Reporting Procedures
    Grades will primarily reflect how well the student has mastered the course objectives/standards.

    Summative assessments will comprise 90% of a student's grade. Summative assessments include tests, projects, simulations, portfolios and other approaches.

    Given the importance of formative assessments/activities in helping students gain and/or increase their understanding (and in helping teachers identify areas needing additional instruction), students will be required to maintain a portfolio consisting of the formative assessments/activities assigned during the marking period. The portfolio for these formative activities will comprise 10% of the final grade. Mastery and understanding of content is enhanced with a review of mistakes corrected and skills gained, and a portfolio provides a structure for this purpose.

    In order to demonstrate mastery/comprehension of a subject, students may retake any summative assessment they have not yet passed (with a C or better). However, before being administered a retake, the student must demonstrate an improved understanding of items he/she missed on the initial summative assessment (correcting previous test mistakes, completing /redoing formative assignments, conferencing with the teacher, etc.).

    Students may retake any summative assessment on their own time approved by the teacher. Retakes may require scheduling before or after school. Arrangements for transportation for these retakes will be the sole responsibility of the students.

    Summative assessments should not be limited to tests, but should include projects, simulations and other approaches (including student critique per a rubric).

    Students will be given a “Z” for formative or summative assessments not completed on time. Within the allocated grading period, appropriate deadlines will be established by the teacher especially for interim/quarter grades and end of course/semester grades. Any "Z" will be counted as zero in the grade calculation.

    When a formative assignment is entered into the Phoenix Grade Book, it will be linked to a standard/objective for the course (where course objectives have been added into the Phoenix Grade Book). The Phoenix Grade Book will be updated at least every two weeks.
  • Grading Legend
    Exempt = Student is exempt from an assignment and the assignment will not be included in any grade calculation.
    Missing = Student has NOT completed the assignment and the assignment counts as a zero in grade calculations until it is turned in and the grade is entered. The “Missing” comment will display until the assignment is turned in and the grade is entered.
    Turned In = The assignment has been turned in, but not yet graded. The assignment is not included in any grade calculation until a grade is entered.
    Late-Turned In = The grade given may reflect the fact that the assignment was turned in late.
    Absent on Due Date =The student was absent when the assignment was due. If the grade is entered, the grade is included in grade calculation.
    Floor Grade = The grade is not reflecting the grade earned, but reflects the practice of "floor" grades.
    Grade Revision Pending = Initial grade recorded, waiting on revision from student for final grade. Entered grade is included in grade calculation.

    Proper pupil accounting requires LCPS to withdraw a student if he/she is not present on the first day of school. This will impact the child’s status in your ParentVUE account. Be assured, when your child attends his/her first day of school, LCPS will re-enroll your child. No action on your part is required.

    Before school starts on 8/22/19, please update to the most recent version of the ParentVUE app.

    Effective August 1, the web version of ParentVUE uses a new, fully responsive interface. The interface for the mobile apps remains unchanged. Sign into the web version of ParentVUE on a computer to check it out!

    Expunge forms for High School courses taken in Middle School in the 18-19 SY may be downloaded by going to the Additional Information tab and clicking Middle School Expunge Form. If you have questions about the process, please contact the Office of School Counseling Services.
